COVID Las Vegas hotel closures: Mirage, Encore temporarily

Las Vegas hotels have reopened in phases since the gambling mecca started welcoming tourists back in June, but visitors planning a trip in early 2021 may find some of their favorites partially closed again as pandemic trips remain sluggish.

The Mirage, which bills itself as the original mega-resort on the Las Vegas Strip, announced this week that as of January 4th, it will only accept reservations for stays Thursday through Sunday.

And unlike a midweek hotel closure that came into effect after Thanksgiving, this closure will encompass the entire place. The casino, restaurants, spa, and the unique Mirage volcano attraction are closed Monday noon through Thursday noon through February.

The hotel cited low levels of business on weekdays in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and Nevada’s group gathering restrictions.

“While we don’t currently expect the weekday closure to remain in effect beyond February, we will continue to evaluate how long the Mirage hotel closure will remain in effect during the week,” said Callie Driehorst, spokeswoman for Mirage’s parent company MGM Resorts in a statement.

When the Mirage announced its closure to midweek hotels only in late November, officials said they didn’t expect it to last beyond December, but that they would monitor business levels to see how long it was in place would stay. Travelers with reservations can cancel or move to a sister hotel.

In October, the last month for which figures are available, the occupancy of hotels and resorts in Las Vegas during the week was 38.6%, compared to 87.1% in October 2019, according to the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority on the weekend was 64.2% compared to 98% in October 2019. The number of visitors to Las Vegas increased by 9% to 1.85 million in October compared to September, but still almost 50% fewer than last year.

The Mirage isn’t the only one that is closed for a few days a week or longer, whether it’s just hotel rooms or all establishments.

Encore at the Wynn Las Vegas has been closed from Monday lunchtime through early Thursday afternoon since October 19, a closure that includes the hotel, casino, and restaurants. Parent company Las Vegas Sands said the schedule would continue indefinitely. The sister resort of Wynn Las Vegas, which is adjacent to Encore, will remain open daily.

And The Palazzo, a sister resort to the Venetian, recently extended its mid-week-only hotel closure to every day for most of December.
