Las Vegas Airport, known as McCarran since 1948, officially becomes Harry Reid International Airport on December 14th.

A small ceremony with government officials and members of Reid’s family is scheduled to take place at the airport.

The Clark County Commission unanimously decided earlier this year to change the name of the airport.

The three-digit code the FAA uses to identify the airport, LAS, is retained.

The rebranding will cost an estimated $ 7 million and will be financed through private donations. Clark County had received more than $ 4 million for the renaming project by October.

Harry Reid Airport served 4.1 million passengers (both arrivals and departures) in October, 9.3% fewer than in October 2019. More than 31.8 million passed the airport in the first 10 months of 2021 , 26.1% less than in the same period in 2019.

The airport handled a record 51.5 million passengers in 2019, and for the third year in a row the airport recorded a new high in passenger numbers.

Reid, 82, served in the U.S. Senate from 1987 until he retired in 2017.

Pat McCarran, who helped establish the federal government’s role in overseeing aviation, served in the U.S. Senate from 1933 until his death in 1954. His name was removed from Las Vegas Airport due to his anti-Semitic views.
