LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – On the Las Vegas Strip, baby turtles were sold by an illegal shop and 80 of them were rescued.

8NewsNow reporter Victoria Saha visited the Animal Foundation where they were being prepared for adoption.

The Animal Foundation is usually filled with bark, but today they were busy looking after creatures that barely make a sound.

Tasha Crabtree, LVT, Veterinary Service Manager at The Animal Foundation, says, “As an open animal, we see a lot of crazy stuff, but having 80 baby turtles at once is definitely less common.”

Crabtree says they were found in a suitcase and noted that there was “some deviation from the smoothness of their shell,” which could suggest they were malnourished.

Shelby Nebeker and her sister planned to adopt a saying, “We already have two in our yard, so if we want one more, especially a baby because they’re so cute, that would be so cool.”

These turtles can live to be more than 13 years old.

The Animal Foundation announced the baby turtles to the public on Monday, and by Tuesday morning 18 of them had been adopted.

On Tuesday night everyone was gone.

The people selling illegally were charged with running an unlicensed business.
