A community leader is the last person intending to run for a seat on the Las Vegas City Council in District 4.
Brenda Flank, executive director of the Alliance for Education and Liberty, a local nonprofit focused on teaching constitutional studies, announced Thursday that she would attempt to represent voters in the northwest district.
“Our needs have been ignored by professional politicians waiting for their next election,” Flank said in a statement. “I am not a politician and I find it an honor to be elected to represent the people in our community.”
Flank, 64, pledged to focus on health and safety issues and job creation as the city tries to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
On her campaign website, which promises to bring “fresh ideas and a bold new perspective” to town hall, she seeks to streamline business licensing for entrepreneurs; Creation of business and community development centers; and ensure that police, fire fighters and medical personnel have the necessary resources to do their jobs.
Flank is a founding member of the Founders Classical Academy of Las Vegas public charter school and has served on various boards, including the NAACP’s Las Vegas chapter, according to their campaign.
She holds a Masters of Business Administration from National University, her campaign said.
Flank, a lifelong Las Vegas resident, also appears to have the support of Rick Harrison, the host of the downtown television series Pawn Stars.
“The Las Vegas City Council needs a leader we can rely on, who is unwaveringly committed to doing the right thing,” Harrison said in a statement. “I trust Brenda Flank, and so can you.”
Flank follows at least three others in the competition to replace tenured councilor Stavros Anthony. Former MP Francis Allen-Palenske, ex-Councilor Bob Beers and former Las Vegas Police Captain Robert Plummer have all said they want to run for the last few weeks.
The registration deadline for candidates for out-of-court races in 2022 starts March 7th. The primaries will take place on June 14th.
