LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Construction of the $ 3.2 million Legacy Park project on the historic west side began with a groundbreaking on Monday.
The park on Mount Mariah Drive near Martin L King Boulevard has exhibits and sculptures that shed light on the history of the area.
“I’m excited to begin construction on this park that will become a cornerstone of Ward 5 and the Las Vegas community,” said Crear, Las Vegas city councilor. “A beautiful park to celebrate the history of the historic west side will be very special.”
“I grew up on the Westside – Ward 5 – and I’m rooted in our community’s stories,” said Crear. “We share a story on the west side that Legacy Park will preserve to ensure future generations know the leaders who stood before us all. It will be a place of awe that evokes emotions and records the struggles and successes of our community. “
Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly attended the ceremony, along with Chase R. McCurdy, a third generation resident in charge of art installations in the park.
The park is a partnership between the City of Las Vegas and Clark County and is expected to be completed in winter 2021.
“Las Vegas has been known to implode a lot of things and not save much of our history,” said Weekly. “Well, that’s one of the things that the city council and I decided on. We wanted to preserve part of history and remember many of the trailblazers who came along this path. If they didn’t have a lot of places to go, that was all they had. “
The park will contain unique elements such as a timeline of the historic west side and an interpretive walking path.

McCurdy oversees many of the park’s functions.
“As an artist and advisor to this project, I hope to honor the legacy of those who came before us with a monumental sculpture called Living Black Pillars, with the desire to create some kind of memorial – a new memorial for this part of us city, the historic west side of Las Vegas, which is extremely important not only to myself but also to those who came before, those who are still here, and those who will come after. “
Additionally, the park will feature trees, landscaping, and a playground and will be in the heart of the Enterprise Park development.
CORE Construction is the contractor and LGA Architecture designed the park.
