Article by HNTB

In the second half of 2015, HNTB worked with Manica Architecture to advance plans to build the Raiders’ new stadium in Carson, California, (Los Angeles) pending NFL approval for the move. In January 2016, the Rams project in Inglewood, California was selected as a franchise to bring the NFL back to the LA market after a 20-year absence.

While representatives from HNTB and Manica attended a coordination meeting for the Carson-based project, they saw social media light up with news of the NFL owner’s decision.

Disappointing at first, the announcement gave the Raiders an opportunity to explore other cities, and for them Las Vegas was the obvious choice. Vegas edgy, exciting, larger-than-life character seemed to go very well with the Raiders brand.

The Raiders quickly turned their attention to Las Vegas, and in the summer of 2016 the terms of a deal to relocate the team to Silver State solidified. In early 2017, HNTB and the project team were handpicked by the Raiders to deliver the project. The stadium’s opening date was originally planned for July 2021. During a coordination meeting in March 2017, Don Webb, the Raiders’ Chief Operating Officer, informed the project team of an expected major change to the schedule.

A hybrid design-build delivery method was the only possible means of achieving the compressed schedule. The delivery method increased client engagement and gave Raiders complete control over the character, quality, quantity and experience of the project during the early, critical design phases through to GMP.

Successes of the project team

• On-time delivery under budget. The project team relied on a hybrid design-build delivery method and delivered the stadium in time for the 2020 NFL season and under the guaranteed maximum price budget of $ 1.6 billion – despite the fact that the schedule was cut by a year and the challenges of a global one Pandemic were taken into account. The raiders received the provisional certificate of residence and the certificate of substantial completion one day before the originally scheduled date.

• Only the second retractable field owned by US Raiders owner Mark Davis insisted on playing football the way it was intended – on natural grass. The moving field is a response to his request.

• The first cable net-supported ETFE roof in the USA The construction extends the limits of ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene coverings.

• The most technically advanced stadium in the country. Allegiant’s massive 40 gig fiber optic backbone means 65,000 fans won’t miss a call, tweet, or exciting moment of the game.

Other architectural achievements include an 80 foot high, 200 foot wide set of lanai doors that open up panoramic views of the Las Vegas skyline. The stadium also features The Torch, the largest 3D-printed structure in the world. The torch is lit before every home game in honor of the Raiders’ late owner and coach, Al Davis.

The technology features include:

• Extended distributed antenna system to ensure cell phones are working properly

• 2,400 TV screens and customizable dynamic news screens

• Faster WiFi 6 technology to keep all fans connected

• Three main display panels and several tape panels, which are attached to the facades of the seats, surround the seat shell

The project team initially moved into an office with the contractor and owners a few blocks from the construction site. Being in the same office area enabled pop-up meetings, free dialogue, and faster decision-making, which is required to adhere to the highly compressed timeline. After construction began, the team moved to a large campus with supporters on site.

Allegiant Stadium End User Benefits

The Raiders played their first home game in their new stadium on Monday evening, September 21, 2020.

In addition to fans and team members, there is a third end-user to consider: the Las Vegas Strip and the surrounding community. Las Vegas will always be a tourist and entertainment destination, but it is also home to a community of 2.25 million people. Now, for the first time in its history, this community has its own NFL team to gather around.

Allegiant Stadium also provides an exciting new venue for the Las Vegas Convention and Exhibition Industry. The stadium offers the assembly of the largest single seating group under one roof in Las Vegas. In addition, Allegiant Stadium will host all home games of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the NFL’s 2022 Pro Bowl, the 2022 PAC 12 Conference college football championship game, and the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

In the end, it was an all-out collaboration that allowed the construction team to seamlessly bend iconic brands and adhere to a highly compressed schedule while delivering a new, iconic venue for Las Vegas.
