Elon Musk’s Boring Company received the required initial permit on Wednesday to build a transportation system that would take passengers in Tesla vehicles through a network of tunnels beneath Las Vegas.

The approval of a special use permit and franchise agreement by Clark County officials would allow the Boring Company to expand their Vegas Loop system beyond its current 1.7 mile footprint, which includes the Las Vegas Convention Center campus with a 29- The mile route connecting 51 stations would include stops at casinos along the Las Vegas Strip, the city’s football stadium, and the UNLV. It would eventually reach McCarran International Airport. The Las Vegas Review journal was the first to report on the approval.

The Boring Company announced it will pay for the tunnels, a point Clark County officials reiterated on Wednesday. According to the agreement with Clark County, the franchise agreement would last for 50 years.

Although the project has reached an important milestone, it is still ongoing. With this special use permit, The Boring Company can apply for land use and building permits for each station and the tunnels. The Boring Company must also obtain a separate franchise agreement from the City of Las Vegas.
