Harbor Freight Tools, with more than 1,200 stores across the country, opens a store in Las Vegas.

The store will be located in the former Bealls department store on 2500 Seventh Street across from Walmart, said Craig Hoffman, director of corporate communications for Harbor Freight. Bealls closed his shop about a year ago.

Renovations are underway for the 18,450-square-foot space, with a gentle opening slated for mid-to-late October and a grand opening slated for the first week of November, Hoffman said.

The business will employ 25 to 30 part-time and full-time employees. Unfamiliar with the salary rate, he did notice that Forbes magazine named the company one of the best places to work for retail and veterans and diversity.

“We’ve been looking for a location in Las Vegas for a while,” he said, noting that this will be the 16th Harbor Freight in New Mexico. The closest store to Las Vegas is in Santa Fe.

Based in Calabasas, California, the company was founded in 1977 as a family-owned mail order company. The company is committed to providing quality tools at the lowest prices to workers and buying them direct from the manufacturer, Hoffman said.

“We’re a national company, but a very local company because we really count on being members of the community and serving the community,” he added.

The shop is open 7 days a week from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
