According to Las Vegas police, a man died in custody Wednesday morning after fighting with officers during his arrest.

The officers were called at 5:03 am after a hotel employee in Block 3500 of Paradise Road reported damage to the front door, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department on Wednesday evening.

“The caller also stated that the topic was inside, yelling and making no sense,” police said. “Security tried to detain the subject, but they fought with them and they were unsuccessful.”

Police said the man ran away when officers arrived and when they were chasing him, he slapped an officer in the face. The officers used “empty hand tactics” to handcuff the man, hold his feet, and put him in “the stable side position.”

“During the transport, the perpetrator repeatedly hit his head against the window of the patrol car,” said the police.

Upon arriving at the Clark County Detention Center, the prison medical staff reported that the man was not available. He was taken to the university hospital, where he died.

The man’s identity and cause and manner of death will be released by Clark County Forensic Medicine after his family is notified.
