LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – We’ll likely break temperature records this week as the valley swells during a day-long heat wave. There is a lot to do for everyone, especially those new to the area.

We all know the basics of dealing with a heat wave: drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and make sure your air conditioning is working. But those who recently moved to Las Vegas haven’t seen temperatures like the ones we’re seeing this week, including David Alcaraz-Duran.

“Coming to Vegas was a huge shock,” Alcaraz-Duran told 8 News Now.

He moved here two months ago. Like many others, he sold his home in San Francisco because of the hot housing market. The weather he was used to, however, is definitely a far cry from the harsh heat of the valley.

“[I] I didn’t know the summers were so hot here, ”said Alcaraz-Duran.

He was surprised at how hot the inside of his car gets, but he’s already learning what the locals do.

“One of my best friends even recommended that we get a parasol and put it in the window,” said Alcaraz-Duran. “I’ve never had an umbrella before, but I’ll definitely run into the store and get one.”

Officials say even those who have lived in Las Vegas for years still need a reminder – especially since the heat wave this week is on the books.

“This year my vehicle overheated for the first time. It hasn’t done it in 10 years, ”said Tim Szymanski, Public Information Officer for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

So what’s the best way to protect yourself? Experts say the most important thing is to stay out of the sun.

“Stay inside between the hottest hours of the day, between 2pm and 7pm,” urged Szymanski.

This is something Alcaraz-Duran has in mind as he settles into his new home.

“We stay inside and try to stay in the air conditioner as much as possible,” he said.

Here are some additional tips for the new Las Vegans out there:

  • Keep an eye on your car. The heat can do serious damage, including sparking if the wires melt. If you notice any problems, get your car checked immediately and do not park it in your garage.
  • The road surface can get extremely hot. Take your pets for a walk early in the morning or late at night. You can even buy slippers to keep them safe.
