Earlier this week, you may have noticed that ESPN put on a showcase game on Labor Day weekend, traditionally the first full weekend of college football season.
Alabama meets Miami in Atlanta. Olemis and Louisville play in Atlanta.
The big one – bigger than any other game in the first week – is Charlottes Clemson versus Georgia.
USC participated in a major first week neutral site game, specifically against Alabama Crimson Tide in Arlington, Texas in 2016.
There is a common thread that goes through these three neutrals. Atlanta, Charlotte and Arlington are not part of the Pac-12 footprint.
Now that George Kliavkoff becomes the youngest commissioner for Pac-12 and has a background as president of the sports and entertainment division of MGM Resorts, the point is clear. In particular, USC and Pac-12 should generally not be used. Want to work together to create a week one neutral site game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas?
It just makes sense doesn’t it? If a major soccer game is taking place in a neutral location in another part of the country, Las Vegas should be part of that region’s collection.
To be honest, Phoenix or Seattle could have a game in a neutral location, but the misery of Las Vegas in early September when Phoenix has lived in those two cities for most of its life. The weather will be fine. .. Seattle is an inconspicuous place. Denver presents the added challenge of playing at high altitude.
Las Vegas is arguably the best neutral place in or near the geographic extent of the Pac-12. George Kliavkoff, with roots in Las Vegas (although he plans to move to San Francisco to take on his role as the new commissioner) is in a good position to develop neutral games at Allegiant Stadium.

The USC or any other Pac-12 team (remembering the days of Boise State University, Chris Petersen) doesn’t necessarily have to travel the country and play before the other team’s fans congregate. Other schools can travel to Las Vegas – and their fans can have a really good time! – And you will receive Pac-12’s hospitality.
However, USC fans can be the majority of the seating arrangements. Isn’t it a refreshing change in speed?
