LAS VEGAS (FOX5) – On Wednesday, the City of Las Vegas voted for a grant that will help Westside residents continue to grow their own healthy foods at the Vegas Roots Community Garden.

The grant will help working families and low-income families continue to grow fresh fruits and vegetables in an area known as the “food wasteland”.

It comes at a time when the pandemic still has many families economically under control.

“Everyone is affected by COVID. And so, at a time when we need access to healthy eating, people who may have been gardening donors and volunteers have faced some challenges, ”said Kathi Thomas, director of community services for the City of Las Vegas.

In a tweet, the city said the move is in line with the Hundred Plan in Action, an initiative focused on improving residential, commercial and citizen investment in the Historic Westside.

The Vegas Roots Community Garden opened in 2010. It is located at 715 N. Tonopah Dr.
