LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – According to US MP Dina Titus (D-Nev.), A US $ 5.25 million counter-terrorism grant has been secured for the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

Funding from the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) is intended to help large metropolitan areas “prevent, mitigate, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks and other disasters,” according to a Washington, DC press release

UASI is subordinate to the Department of Homeland Security.

“Right now we’re welcoming visitors from all over the world who travel to Las Vegas to work and play. As a world-class travel destination, Las Vegas faces unique threats and the safety of our city must remain a top priority, ”said Titus.

“This UASI funding is an important investment in the security of Las Vegas and will help us protect those who call southern Nevada home and those who only do so on the weekends,” she said.

Titus is a member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Titus pledged in February that she would work to receive the full $ 5.25 million when she announced the metropolitan area was eligible for the grant.

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Las Vegas struggled to obtain counter-terrorism funding, despite evidence that terrorists met here prior to the attack. Additionally, the October 1, 2017 shooting at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip marks the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
