With the delta variant of COVID-19, which is ringing the alarm bells nationwide, mask requirements for indoor areas were rightly reintroduced, both for vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
Fortunately, that mandate has never been relaxed here – and islanders traveling to Las Vegas should know that wearing masks indoors was reintroduced there on Friday. This is especially good for all of us here, as about 20% of the daily case numbers in Hawaii are travel-related – the contagion is spread by returning residents, not so much by mainland visitors.
Would-be hikers in Maunawili
Volunteer and paid security guards turn away would-be hikers of the Maunawili Falls Trail. Although the state has officially closed the popular nature walk for two years, people still show up at the locked gate.
One of the residents handed out sheets with QR codes on Friday that led visitors to alternative access to the falls.
The leading hiking app AllTrails now lists the standard trailhead as closed. “Bummer”, the app announces. Perhaps for the visitors, but the neighbors cheer.
