Films: Silver State Film Festival at Century Orleans
It’s been a minute since we’ve enjoyed the non-streaming film festival, but when you’re tired and ready to mask yourself, Silver State has a weekend of local and international independent films, including a screening of Pj Perez’s UNLV district -Documentation Parkway of Broken Dreams and Justin McAffee’s Document on the Impending Dangers to Our Mojave Desert Apocalypse. Readings: Axie Oh & Veeda Bybee in the Writers Block
The downtown literary center is home to two young adult writers, and we’re all ears. Las Vegas-based Axie Oh will share passages from her July K-drama XOXO, which follows an ambitious cello prodigy who first meets a mysterious, handsome man at a karaoke bar, only to discover he is is a K-pop sensation that won’t go out (crap!). Meanwhile, ex-journalist Veeda Bybee arrives with Lily and the Great Quake: A San Francisco Earthquake Survival Story, a harrowing story about a 12-year-old Chinese-American girl and her fight against the elements – and the odds. Party: Chromeo at Discopussy
Canada is the gift that always passes – Justin Trudeau, Drake, Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber. And now at Discopussy Chromeo. The electro-funk duo north of the border gets the Halloween weekend into full swing with a DJ set consisting of synth-pop, soul and, appropriately, disco. Celebration: Life in Death Festival at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center
In honor of the Día de los Muertos – a Mexican holiday honoring deceased family members and friends – Winchester Dondero is hosting a two-day event that includes an art exhibition, an ofrenda competition, performances by Mexican dance groups, and readings of Calaveras (humorous poems making fun of the living ). Concerts: Phish at the MGM Grand Garden Arena
After months of speculation, we will soon know: what Halloween trick did Phish hide in this year’s candy pillowcase? Earlier Vegas costume sets included The Velvet Undergrounds Loaded, David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, and an obscurity of the Scandinavian prog rock outfit Kasvot Växt (actually a set of wild new tunes from Phishing himself ). Will October 31st deliver a well-known Neil Young, Radiohead or Frank Zappa favorite, or a surprise out of nowhere? Show: An evening with Whitney at Harrah’s
One can easily imagine a world where Whitney Houston is putting on her own amazing residency show – one of the greatest singers of all time taking her rightful place on the Las Vegas Strip. While that’s not our reality, their music is celebrated with this fascinating new hologram concert production kicking off at Harrah’s showroom at Base Entertainment, GFour Productions and Houston’s Estate. Supported by a live band, singers and dancers who lead the audience through their many hits, this legendary voice is celebrated in a new way. 28.-31.
