How did space tourism get so sticky so quickly?

Space gambling

The purely tourist Inspiration4 crew is currently orbiting Earth in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule after being launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday night.

Now they’re chilling up there, capturing zillion dollar views from a massive glass dome – and apparently indulging in some good old-fashioned gambling.

Mission commander and billionaire financier Jared Isaacman “just became the FIRST person ever to place a bet from space to Las Vegas,” according to casino giant MGM Resorts International.

Reality check

How did space tourism get so sticky so quickly? Are we on our way to a future of space travel dominated by slot machines and giant billboards like those that will become commonplace in William Gibson’s science fiction epic “Neuromancer”?

After all, BetMGM is donating $ 25,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Crew Dragon was also crammed with NFTs, yet another attempt by Isaacman to raise money for the hospital.

Our opinion? Something like that makes the trip look like one big infomercial. At the same time, these are private individuals who circumnavigate the world in a private vehicle. They can do what they want, at least to a certain extent, even if that includes watching movies and eating cold pizza.
