Founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (WCK) harnesses the power of food to feed communities and boost the economy in times of crisis and beyond. In 2020, as COVID-19 strains traditional food safety safety nets such as school feeding programs, city services and blackboards, WCK decided to safely distribute individually wrapped, fresh meals to communities in need of assistance and launched the nationwide scaled program Restaurants for the people. This program fulfills critical needs on two fronts: buy food direct from restaurants and deliver it to Americans in need. To date, the program has worked with 2,500 restaurants to serve over 12 million restaurant meals and has paid more than $ 135 million direct to restaurant owners in 400 cities in 35 states.
