A mother of three from Las Vegas was threatened with eviction from her home. A GoFundMe helped her raise thousands of dollars to cover her outstanding balance.
Dasha Kelly, 32, was among the millions at risk of being evicted from their homes following the state eviction moratorium last weekend.
Kelly lost her job during the pandemic, CNN reported earlier this week. She organized a GoFundMe on Monday to raise enough money to pay $ 2,000 in additional rentals.
“My name is Kelly and I have 3 daughters who live in Nevada. We were fine before the outbreak of this pandemic. Now we are suffering, “says the GoFundMe description. “We have EBT on groceries and we also applied for chap. They don’t help right away, though. We owe $ 1,900 for rent alone, with no extra charges. I’ll find out about the extra charges by mortgaging a few things. As you all know, it’s still too hot to be homeless. My daughters are 5, 6 and 8 years old. “
CNN reported that it received a plethora of donations and raised more than $ 170,000 in 24 hours. As of Saturday, the fundraiser had reached $ 231,600 with nearly 4,000 donors.
“It gave me a lot of hope,” Kelly told CNN. “And I just want to make sure I’m doing my best to help the next person who is in my same situation.”
In an update on her campaign page, Kelly thanked her for the donations and paid off her entire lease. She added that not only would she donate some of the money to charity and buy a car to get to work, but she would also set aside money for her three daughters.
“I will open an account for every girl with 5000 so that it can be built up by the age of 18,” wrote Kelly. “You will get new clothes, shoes, and some toys. We will also create a rainy day family fund of 50,000.
Although the eviction moratorium had previously expired, the CDC announced a new order that will protect renters living in areas severely affected by COVID-19 until October 3.
