A futuristic circular pedestrian bridge is to be built over the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue by the end of 2024.

The project could cost up to $ 40 million, according to the city of Las Vegas, but the projected price could drop depending on prices tied to delivery costs at the time of construction, the city reported in a blog post. In 2019, the city estimated the project, which is a collaboration with Clark County and the Regional Transportation Commission, would cost $ 27.5 million.

The city reports that between 70,000 and 85,000 vehicles pass the intersection every day as thousands of pedestrians cross the four corners.

According to the city, there were 595 accidents at the intersection between 2009 and 2018, with 326 injured and two dead.

Las Vegas City Council could award Prime Design Services the design contract for the $ 1.47 million project at Wednesday’s meeting.

The draft of the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year, with the contractor being bidding for the project, which is scheduled for early 2023.

Although the pedestrian bridge brings an urgently needed safety element for pedestrians at the intersection, it means another construction round. In the area near the north end of the strip, road improvement projects were undertaken on either side of the intersection.

“Yes, it will mean more construction work for the area at some point, but the safety for everyone outweighs the frustration with further traffic cones and closures,” the city’s blog post said.
