Summer is a sensational time of year to enjoy the seafood in Las Vegas. It’s light and refreshing, delicious and filling, and it’s a culinary genre that is practiced in so many different ways in unique restaurants across the valley.
A true neighborhood gem that is so celebrated by locals that many Vegas visitors have noticed. Other mom (702.463.8382) sets the standard for raw food bars, serving fresh oysters, sushi and sashimi, chilled shellfish platters and more. James Beard Award finalist Dan Krohmer runs this casual, friendly kitchen in the west of the city, always adding something new to the menu and daily specials that reflect the fresh catch. Grilled octopus with roasted chilies and roasted chicken lobster are just two of the innovative dishes that satisfy regulars at Other Mama these days.
Another local seafood institution is west of the Strip, a restaurant so popular that there is usually a line to get a seat. But the food is worth the wait Oyster bar at Palace Station (702.367.2411), where half-shell oysters, steamed clams, homemade chowders and seafood pasta dishes are available 24/7. The house specialty is the Palace Pan Roast, a creamy, spicy tomato stew with prawns, crabs, chicken and andouille sausage and topped off with a dash of brandy. This oyster bar is an unforgettable experience.
The MGM Grand restaurant of the culinary titan Emeril Lagasse is instantly recognizable, Emeril’s Fish House in New Orleans (702.891.7374), is another cornerstone of the Vegas seafood pantheon. Soothing Creole classics are the most popular dishes on this menu, from New Orleans-style grilled prawns to flavorful prawn gumbo. Intoxicating aromas in abundance with seared Hawaiian Ahi Done-Oscar, Chilean sea bass bouillabaisse and baked Maine lobster with a green brandy-peppercorn-cream sauce.
Mastros Ocean Club (702.798.7115) at The Shops at Crystals remains a refined seafood experience in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. The iconic “tree house” dining room and sophisticated approach to classic dishes such as shrimp cocktail, fried calamari, lobster bisque and blackened swordfish make for a memorable meal every time. Mastro’s steakhouse side dishes are the perfect complement, sweet lobster meat finds its way into macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes and the legendary butter cake is the perfect end to your individual festive meal.
Don’t miss out if you want to take it a little looser Luke’s lobster (702.866.6602) at the Las Vegas fashion show. Authentic New England-style lobster, shrimp, and crab rolls are what Luke’s all about, but don’t be fooled by the nondescript outdoor shack outside the Strip’s shopping destination. This restaurant works with fishermen from the northeast to select only the sweetest and juiciest seafood to make these irresistible sandwiches, soups and side dishes. Who would have thought that seafood could be so quick and delicious?
