Ghost kitchens, those restaurants that offer take-away and no-seat delivery, were all the rage during the pandemic, and now five newcomers are bringing an array of groceries to the downtown Gateway District, west of the stratosphere. Japanese sandwiches and rice boxes, Hawaiian lunchtime dishes, mochi donuts, jerk dishes, clever Indian sliders and chicken wings all find a home in one place at 333 W. St. Louis Ave. But all of them only offer take-away and delivery.
Gyu + offers Japanese-inspired sandwiches and rice boxes. Togarashi chips; Sandwiches with mushrooms, Wagyu beef and truffles, eggs, steak and chicken; and boxes filled with vegetables and rice, Iberico chorizo and rice or pork belly and rice make up the menu. Matiki Island BBQ specializes in Hawaiian lunches with beef ribs, veal short rib or teriyaki chicken or beef, each with two scoops of white rice and a choice of potato and macaroni salad or a mixed green salad. Good Kitchen specializes in home-style cooking with a modern southern flair such as Cajun Seafood Fries; twisted ranch nachos with Cool Ranch Doritos with cheese, chicken, bacon and ranch; and peach cobbler funnel fries. Caribbean dishes like jerk barbecue wings and jerk lamb chops are served on Saturdays and Sundays, but jerk alfredo pasta, jerk fries, and jerk nachos are on the menu until they sell out. Mochidon’s menu offers mochi donuts, a mix of the sweet, chewy Japanese rice dessert and a classic American deep-fried donut, in six flavors: matcha oreo, double chocolate, ube coconut, cookies and cream, horchata cinnamon, and milk and muesli with fruity pebbles on top. Zest India offers Indian sliders called Pav filled with lamb vindaloo, fried fish, fried chicken, Impossible vegan kabobs on vegan bread or the Bombay Pav with a spicy potato patty with tamarind and green chutney. Vegetarian and meat-filled curries range from saag chicken, lamb vindaloo or butter chicken to dal kale, shahi cauliflower or chana masala. The restaurant also offers roti and naan options. Zest India, 425-588-6224, is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 9:30 PM.
Harold’s Wings keeps it simple with chicken wings, chicken strips, and a chicken strip sandwich. Open Monday to Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Order at 702-841-8407.
