Swoop Airlines announced its new non-stop service between Victoria International Airport (YYJ) and Las Vegas and Puerto Vallarta on the same day it flew its first flight between the capital of British Columbia and Toronto.

The June 24 announcement said YYJ travelers can now book flights to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, the first of which departs on October 31, followed by bi-weekly flights. Victoria to Puerto Vallarta will be bookable on June 30th and Swoop will offer weekly connections on Sundays.

Victoria Airport Authority President / CEO Geoff Dickson said the authority was pleased with the news.

“We know Greater Victoria greatly appreciates the support that Swoop is showing in our community and contribution to our local economy,” he said in a press release. He expects the availability of direct flights to Las Vegas and Puerto Vallarta – both popular destinations from Victoria – to create a lot of excitement with the pent-up travel needs.

Regarding the new international flights, Fletch Brunelle, vice president of marketing and sales for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said Canadian travelers have long enjoyed the “adult freedom” that Las Vegas offers. “We are very excited to see you again for new resorts, dynamic entertainment, a variety of dining experiences and world-class sporting events,” he said.

Luis Villaseñor, executive director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, shared the opinion of his American contemporary. “As travel restrictions ease, we are ready to welcome swoop passengers from British Columbia for year-round sunshine, sea-to-mountain views, inclusive experiences and our signature brand of authentic Mexican hospitality,” he said .
