Even before the start of the Blue Man Group show, you are in the best of spirits, thanks to a digital live ticker on both sides of the crowd, which gives the audience instructions, such as applause for well-known athletes in the audience or “Happy Birthday!” someone in tune. It’s that simple, but it really makes the crowd warm up and for the fun to come.
Once the driving EDM music starts (anyone who’s been to the Electric Daisy Carnival will know exactly what we’re talking about) it’s hard not to move your body. The Blue Men appear immediately, making noises with objects that don’t look like instruments at all, moving their bodies rhythmically, their eyes wide and full of curiosity. Families with young children should know that a show is suitable for all ages.
Little is spoken throughout the show (other than tutorials on how colors are interpreted in our brain and how plumbing works); the Blue Men wordlessly discover the musical properties of Cap’n Crunch and cell phones, not to mention the artistic possibilities of chewed gum, mouths full of marshmallows and spilled paint on drums that are furiously beaten.
One of the show’s signature moments – when a volunteer viewer is brought on stage to share a dinner with the Blue Men, complete with music, flowers, and twinkies – has been slightly changed in line with safety protocols; We don’t want to reveal too much other than that the segment is just as hilarious as it was before.
When the show climaxes with large, mechanical insects that can be played like a percussion instrument, followed by wisps of smoke rising from drums – we dare you not try to catch one! – you will be on your feet preparing a sweat.
Sometimes we need to remember that in this time of great division, music is still a unifying force.
