The 2021 Maui Invitational begins Monday November 22nd and runs through Wednesday November 24th. However, this year’s tournament is ironically not taking place in Maui.
For the second year in a row, Maui will not host the Maui Invitational due to Hawaii’s COVID-19 travel restrictions and protocols. This year Las Vegas will host the tournament at the Michelob Ultra Arena at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
Eight teams will compete in the tournament, including Butler, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Saint Mary’s (CA), Texas A&M, Wisconsin and Chaminade. Chaminade is a Division II school that has played in the Maui Invitational every year since 2018. In the future, they will take part in the tournament every odd year, including this year. Reigning champions Texas and runner-up North Carolina will not participate in the tournament this year.

Why is the Maui Invitational in Las Vegas?
This is the second year in a row that the Maui Invitational is not held in Hawaii due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, the tournament was held in North Carolina due to travel restrictions. However, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said North Carolina wasn’t Maui-like enough for the tournament, so they decided to go to Las Vegas this year because the location is closer to Maui than North Carolina.
There are still various travel restrictions in place for travelers heading to Hawaii and the tournament directors said they didn’t want to worry about the tournament being canceled. For example, Hawaii requires a vaccination card and / or a negative COVID-19 test to enter the state. If a player or players could not offer this, it would put the tournament at risk. Check out the Hawaii travel restrictions here.
